Cognitive Load Theory and Practical Work

Cognitive load theory attempts to explain the cognitive processes related to learning, and develop strategies to increase the likelihood of students learning effectively.

Its basis is that memory is divided into

  • working memory, which has a very limited capacity, and
  • long-term memory, which is effectively limitless.

and that problems arise when the cognitive "load" of the task in hand exceeds the capacity of the working memory.

This can be a particular issue for some learners with additional support needs.

More information, particularly in regard to some methods for addressing the problem in chemistry can be found here.
