Dates:

Part 1: – Friday 21st March 2025 (face to face at SSERC)

Part 2: - Tuesday 10th June 2025 (twilight online session)

Closing Date for application: Friday 28th February 2025

Over the past few years, whether via the Scottish government roll out or ‘the next gen’ micro:bit offer, Scottish schools have been provided with micro:bits to enhance the teaching of Computing Science within their settings. While there are a lot of resources and CPD opportunities online to support the use of micro:bits, we are looking to run a full day face-to-

face event at SSERC to provide the opportunity for delegates to have a focussed PL day with guided support and help.

The course we have created is an introduction to the micro:bit V2, with a focus on:

· Exploring the micro:bit and all of its functionality via hands on activities, while developing knowledge of block coding and the Make Code programming platform

· How to use the vast amount of online resources to support your teaching, and which platforms would suit you and your learners best.

· Developing an understanding of Computing Science concepts and how to teach these to learners, and also considering different pedagogical approaches.

· Delving into the cross curricular elements of the micro:bit to demonstrate how this fantastic resource can be used to enhance language, maths, science, music, HWB and more.

This course will provide a foundational introduction to Computing Science at the First/Second level and evidence why it is so important for our learners.

Throughout the day we will provide practical workshops introducing and using micro:bit v2, allowing delegates to explore the purpose of a micro:bit, how to programme their micro:bit to carry out a range of tasks and how it can enhance Computing Science outcomes.

The micro:bit has limitless possibilities and this course is designed to get you and your learners started on a journey to explore this amazing resource.

If you are interested in finding out more about what the micro:bit can do, click here to watch a video introduction.

No prior knowledge is required to access this course, so if you are interested in the possibilities that micro:bits can bring to your setting, then please sign up below.

*For those schools/delegates who do not have their own micro:bits provided by the Scottish Government or ‘the next gen’ roll out, the following professional learning from SSERC affords the opportunity to borrow a class kit of micro:bits, starting from the face to face day at SSERC and lasting around 2 school terms. This will allow delegates to instantly apply their learning in their setting, focussing on small groups or class implementation, as well as sharing with staff in their school.

Audience

For Educators working in and around First and Second level CfE.

While the course will focus on using micro:bit up to Second Level, it is also a useful tool to engage with Computing Science concepts and approaches across the BGE.

Rationale

This exciting professional learning practical course provides the opportunity for you to try out engaging Computing Science activities, and to consider how they can be transferred to your own setting.

Core outcomes covered:

Organiser - Designing, building and testing computing solutions

I can demonstrate a range of basic problem solving skills by building simple programs to carry out a given task, using an appropriate language. TCH 1-15a

I can create, develop and evaluate computing solutions in response to a design challenge. TCH 2-15a

Other Experiences and Outcomes will be covered through the course and these will be referenced when appropriate.

Aim and objectives

On completion of this training, you should be able to:

· Demonstrate how to ‘get started’ with teaching micro:bit and how it can be used to enhance creativity, problem solving and collaboration.

· Embed the micro:bit as a tool for enhancing Computing Science experiences and outcomes within your setting.

· Use the MakeCode block coding platform to program the micro:bit to carry out a range of tasks, considering different inputs/outputs.

· Engage with and use the wide range of resources, activities and tutorials available via the micro:bit online environments.

· Confidently engage with Computing Science concepts and pedagogical approaches to enhance the teaching of micro:bit in your setting
