  SSERC offers a vast portfolio of professional learning (PL) programmes for STEM educators in Scotland. Our curricular based PL is offered to everyone: childminders, early years workers, primary and secondary staff as well as lecturers, technicians and those who work with young people in non-formal settings such as youth workers and in the CLD sector.

STEM Engagement

  SSERC offers a wide range of STEM engagement and enrichment programmes to further increase access to, and participation in STEM, well beyond the classroom setting. Senior Phase Chemistry for Technicians All Events

This courses is intended to give technicians experience in some of the chemistry techniques used in schools that are not covered in our other courses, most of which are only encountered at Higher or Advanced Higher.

It covers a significant amount of organic preparation with skills such as distillation, reflux, vacuum filtration use of a separating funnel, drying solutions.

We will also look at chromatography, standard solutions, melting points and more.

And we will also have a session covering some of the trickier classroom demonstrations that technicians may be involved with: either preparing or carrying out.

Course dates: 19th – 20th February 2025

Closing date: 17th January 2025

Audience

School Technical Support Staff. Access to this unit will be at the discretion of the centre. It is recommended that you have attended our Chemical handling Course before attending but this is not essential for anyone with a sound chemistry background. If you are unsure, contact us at SSERC.

Rationale

This course forms part of a suite of competency based CLPL for support staff.
